A ‘MOON WHITE’ GLAZED YAOZHOU CELADON VASE

Jin Dynasty (A.D. 1115-1234)

with slender pear-shaped body and tall cylindrical neck flaring out to a broad mouth with upright lipless rim, the base rounded in to a short ring foot, covered inside and out with a translucent glaze of even pale sea-green tone, the recessed base with a thin layer of glaze fired to pale tan-brown and the edge of the foot left unglazed revealing the fine gray ware fired to a pale tan color, with spots of dark iron-brown.

Height 11 12 inches (29.2 cm)

A very similar Yaozhou vase was exhibited at the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, and illustrated in the catalogue entitled The Masterpieces of Yaozhou Ware, Osaka, 1997, no. 103, p. 81, and the same vase was included in the special exhibition which travelled to three museums in Japan and illustrated in the catalogue entitled Song Ceramics, Tokyo, 1999, no. 17, p. 54.  Another Yaozhou ‘Moon White’ glazed vase of similar form is illustrated in Song Ceramics from the Kwan Collection, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1994, no. 92, pp. 220-221.

Compare also the plain celadon vase of similar form excavated in Huairou county and now in the Capital Museum, Beijing, published in the catalogue of the special exhibition at the Palace Museum entitled Gems of China’s Cultural Relics, Beijing, 1990, no. 136.
