A CARVED YAOZHOU CELADON COSMETIC BOX AND COVER
Northern Song Dynasty (A.D. 960-1127)
of circular form, the close-fitting shallow domed cover deftly carved with a central flower rising on a slender curving stem and surrounded by six trefoil curling leaves, the interior of the base with three small cup-shaped containers covered with a rich russet-brown glaze and applied with three lotus stems radiating from the center, arching between the cups and each ending in a small curled lotus leaf, the steeply rounded underside of the base raised on a knife-pared ring foot, the glaze of characteristic olive-green color, wiped away from the very neatly pared rims of the cover and base, the exposed fine-grained gray stoneware burnt to a orangey-tan color at the edges in the firing.

Two similar Yaozhou boxes lacking the covers but showing the same arrangement of three brown-glazed cups and lotus stems on the interior were exhibited at the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka and illustrated in the catalogue entitled The Masterpieces of Yaozhou Ware, Osaka, 1997, no. 51, from the Yao Zhou Ware Museum, and no. 52 from the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum, on p. 42.
Compare also the carved celadon circular box and cover with three receptacles inside, from the Eumorfopoulos Collection, illustrated by Ayers, Far Eastern Ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1980, fig. 128.
An excavated example from the Huangpu town kiln site near Tongchuan city, Shaanxi province, is illustrated in Song Dai Yaozhou Yao Zhi (The Yaozhou Kiln Site of the Song Period), Beijing, 1998, col. pl. 11, no. 2 and pl. 94, no. 1, with line drawing in fig. 171, no. 8, p. 343.
