A FINE BROWN-AND-BLACK-GLAZED STONEWARE JAR

Five Dynasties Period, circa 10th Century

of well potted ovoid form, standing on a solid circular foot with chamfered edge, the steeply rounded sides covered with a lustrous black glaze decorated with dots and fine streaks of iron-brown, and with a rich wash of iron-brown around the slightly flared and rounded lip, extending down unevenly around the short sides of the cylindrical neck, the black glaze on the body ending in a thick roll just above the splayed edge of the foot, revealing the dense gray stoneware body which has turned to pale buff color on the surface as a result of the firing, with iron-brown flecks overall, the interior of the vessel almost entirely covered with a thin coating of rust-brown glaze.
