A BROWN-AND-BLACK-GLAZED POTTERY JAR WITH HANDLE
Song Dynasty (A.D. 960-1279)
of well-potted guan shape, with a rope-twist handle arching over the wide mouth, joined to the moulded lip rim by wide triangular terminals, covered inside and out with a streaked and mottled black and rust-brown glaze continuing over the handle, the surface showing an attractive iridescence overall, ending in an even line well above the base resting on a sturdy square-cut ring foot, the exposed stoneware burnt olive-brown in the firing.

One other example of this rare form, with loosely painted rust-brown decoration on a black ground is illustrated in Black Porcelain from the Mr. and Mrs. Yeung Wing Tak Collection, Guangzhou, 1997, no. 49, pp. 102-103, described as Yaozhou ware.
