A LARGE CARVED DINGYAO WHITE PORCELAIN FOLIATE BOWL
Northern Song Dynasty (A.D. 960–1127)
boldly carved on the interior with a classic lotus pattern, centered by a large open lotus bloom rising on a slender leafy stalk which crosses through the center of the bowl, and with a large ruffle-edged lily pad shown in profile at one side, the rest of the steeply rounded sides filled with sprays of curling leaves, the lip divided into six petal lobes by shallow notches, the shallow ring foot neatly finished with square-cut edges and the transparent glaze of ivory-white tone showing characteristic ‘tear marks’ on the exterior.

It is rare to find a Dingyao bowl of this large size although the carved pattern is a classic design well known on Dingyao bowls of smaller size and in different shapes. Compare the similar large Dingyao bowl carved with the same pattern from the Imperial Palace Collection in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in the special exhibition catalogue entitled Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Ting Ware White Porcelain, Taipei, 1987, no. 37.
