A HUANGUALI SLOPING-STILE CABINET

17th- 18th Century

of small size and slender proportions with carefully chosen well figured panels on the doors and sides framed by tapering stiles, mounted in huangtong (yellow brass) with simple door pulls and lock plates.

25 x 39 12 x 13 inches (63.5 x 100 x 33 cm)

This type of cabinet was used to hold scrolls, books, paper and other paraphernalia relevant to literati pursuits.

The use of plain flat surfaces and slender stiles lends this cabinet a bold austerity which was highly appreciated by Ming scholars.
